UV Treatment

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s LT2 rule requires us and all other unfiltered systems to install and operate secondary treatment for microbial contaminants.  We have chosen to use ultraviolet (UV) treatment as it is a chemical-free, highly effective treatment process for the inactivation of microbial contaminants.  This new system will be placed in line following our ozonation process providing yet another step in treatment to ensure we provide you with the safest drinking water possible.

On June 5, 2012, our City Council authorized us to hire Woodard and Curran Engineering firm to design and oversee the construction of our UV process.  Woodard and Curran has years of experience with many local water systems including ours.  They are currently designing and overseeing several UV and plant upgrades here in Maine.  We are excited to get this process underway to keep our Department in compliance with federal regulations.
